Know the signs of dementia
When discussing the signs of dementia, it is important to know that the term dementia itself is not referring to a disease, but to a group of symptoms that are related to a decline in memory that has significant and noticeable impact on a person’s ability to perform basic, everyday task. Although the symptoms of dementia can vary significantly from person to person, an individual must display a decline in two core areas of function before they are considered as having dementia. Those core areas are: memory, communication and language, ability to focus and pay attention, reasoning and judgement, and visual perception (Alzheimer’s Association, 2018). Although not an inclusive list, examples of daily activities that may become noticeably harder include: remembering where a purse, keys or wallet are, paying bills on time, and remembering appointments.
Types of Dementia
There are many different types of dementia. Each type is associated with the particular part of the brain that is being damaged. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 50-70% of all dementia cases. However, it is not the only type. Other types of dementia include: dementia with Lewy bodies (accounting for approximately 15% of dementia cases), frontotemporal dementia (accounting for approximately 5% of dementia cases, and Vasculare dementia (accounting for approximately 20% of dementia cases). Outside of these common types of dementia, dementia can also be related to diseases or conditions such as: strokes, Parkinson’s disease, down syndrome, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Huntington’s disease, Korsakoff syndrome and hydrocephalus.
Causes of dementia
When cells of the brain begin to suffer damage, this damage interferes with the brain’s ability to communicate with itself and therefore causes dementia. When that brain cannot effectively communicate with itself, normal functions become impaired, such as thinking, behavior and emotions. Damage to brain cells can be cased from protein build-up in the brain, diseases such as Parkinson’s or strokes, exposure to certain environmental conditions, or from simply lack of use. The saying “Use it or Lose it” is not meant for only your muscles, but your brain too!
